Sept 28

 Prompt Response:

When I was younger, I believed that adults had everything figured out and always knew what to do. As I got older, I realized that adults are still learning and making mistakes just like everyone else.

Summary:
I believed adults always knew the answers and had everything under control.

Reflection:
Now I understand that nobody has everything figured out. Growing up has taught me that making mistakes is normal and can help you learn.

Sept 25

Prompt Response:
Troy’s experience made me think about how unfair treatment can limit people’s opportunities. If I were in Troy’s position, I would speak up for myself and work hard to make sure I was being treated fairly.

Summary:
Troy is frustrated because racial discrimination affects his opportunities at work.

Reflection:
I think everyone should have a fair chance, no matter their race or background. This part of the play shows how discrimination can affect someone’s life and career.

Sept 24

 Prompt Response:

The character who stood out to me the most was Rose because she stayed strong through everything she went through with Troy. The biggest theme I noticed was family and forgiveness. My project shows Rose’s struggles and how she found the strength to keep moving forward.

Summary:
Fences shows how family, choices, and forgiveness can affect people.

Reflection:
I learned that people can make mistakes, but it’s important to learn from them and move forward.

Sept 22

 Prompt Response:

The character who stood out to me the most was Rose because she stayed strong even when she went through difficult situations with Troy. I learned that the play is about family, love, responsibility, and forgiveness. My project represents what I learned by showing Rose’s struggles and how she found the strength to move forward.

Summary:
Fences shows how family conflicts and choices can affect people for years.

Reflection:
This play taught me that people make mistakes, but you can learn from them and choose how you move forward.

Sept 21

 Prompt Response:

I don’t think forgiving someone means you have to forget what they did. You can forgive someone and still remember the lesson you learned from the situation. Forgiveness is more about letting go of the anger and moving forward.

Summary:
Forgiveness can help people move on without pretending that the hurt never happened.

Reflection:
I believe it’s okay to forgive someone while still being careful with them. Some experiences teach you who you can trust and how to protect your peace.

Sept 14

 Prompt Response:

Yes, I’ve had to choose between doing something I wanted and doing something I needed to do. Sometimes I have to choose schoolwork or responsibilities over hanging out with friends. I usually choose what I need to do because I know it will help me in the future.

Summary:
Troy explains how his responsibilities and past choices affected his life.

Reflection:
I can relate to Troy because sometimes you have to put your responsibilities first. Even when it’s not what I want to do, I’m usually satisfied because I know I made the responsible choice.

In Scene 4, Troy explains his beliefs about his responsibilities as a father.

Prompt Response:

I believe parents owe their children more than just food, clothing, and shelter. Children also need love, encouragement, support, and someone they can talk to. Parents don’t have to be their child’s best friend, but they should make their child feel cared for and supported.

Summary:

Troy believes his responsibility as a father is mainly providing for his family, but being a parent also involves emotional support.

Reflection:

I think having a parent who listens and encourages you can make a big difference. Kids should feel like they can depend on their parents, especially when they are going through something difficult.

In Scene 4, Troy talks about his past, his responsibilities

Prompt Response:

Yes, I’ve had to choose between something I wanted to do and something I needed to do. Sometimes I want to spend time with my friends or have fun, but I have schoolwork or other responsibilities that need to come first. I usually choose what I need to do because I know it will benefit me in the future.

Summary:
Troy talks about how his responsibilities and past choices affected his life.

Reflection:
I can relate to Troy because sometimes you have to put your responsibilities before what you want. Even though it can be hard, I’m usually satisfied with my choice because I know I did what I needed to do.

In Fences, Lyons asks his father, Troy, to lend him money.

Prompt Response:

I think adult children can ask their parents for money if they really need help, but they should also try to handle their financial problems on their own. Family should be there to support each other, but it is also important to learn how to be responsible with money. I believe asking for help is okay as long as you are not taking advantage of your parents.

Summary:
Adult children should try to be independent, but parents can still help when their children are struggling.

Reflection:
I believe family should help each other when they can. Money can sometimes cause problems in families, so it is important to communicate and be responsible.

In Fences, the fence is a physical object, but it can also represent the emotional or personal barriers people create.

Prompt Response:

A “fence” I have built in my life is keeping some of my feelings to myself. Sometimes I do this because I don’t want to be judged or misunderstood. This fence has helped protect me, but it can also hold me back because I don’t always let people know how I really feel.

Summary:
The fence represents the emotional walls people build to protect themselves from getting hurt.

Reflection:
I can relate to this because I’ve learned that protecting yourself is important, but you also have to let the right people in. Sometimes opening up can help you feel less alone.

In “Missing Your People,” Tracy Brower explains the importance of belonging. Describe a time when you felt like you truly belonged. What created that feeling?

Prompt Response: I felt like I truly belonged when I joined marching band. Being around people who shared the same interests made me feel accepted.

Summary: Marching band gave me a place where I felt comfortable and included.

Reflection: It showed me how important it is to have people around you who make you feel like you belong.

Write about a fear you have overcome.

Prompt Response:
A fear I have overcome is my fear of dying. I used to think about it a lot and it would make me scared. Over time, I learned that death is a part of life, and I should focus more on enjoying the time I have.

Summary:
I realized that being scared of something I cannot control was keeping me from enjoying the present.

Reflection:
Overcoming this fear taught me to appreciate life more and not let fear stop me from making memories with the people I care about.

Reflect on a time when you discovered a new perspective that completely changed how you viewed a person, group, or place. How did your previous “single story” shape your thoughts or actions?

Prompt Response:

A time I discovered a new perspective was when I got to know someone I had judged based on what other people told me. I thought they were a certain type of person, but after actually talking to them, I realized I had judged them without knowing their full story.

Summary:
My first opinion of them came from what other people said, so I only knew one side of the story. Once I got to know them myself, I realized there was more to them than what I had heard.

Reflection:
This taught me not to judge people based on one story. Everyone has their own experiences and personality, and I should take the time to get to know someone before making assumptions.

Prompt: If you could share one dish from your culture or family traditions with someone who has never tried it, what would you choose? What would you want that person to understand about you or your culture through that dish?
